When Your Electrical Points Stop Working

A dead outlet or a switch that won't respond isn't a minor inconvenience. It's an electrical problem that can get worse if the wiring behind the wall is the real issue. Priceless Electric handles outlet and switch repair throughout the Augusta metro and Columbia County, and we've been doing it for over 20 years. John Price is a licensed Georgia electrician who personally backs every job, so when you call (706) 627-6021, you're getting a real tradesman, not a dispatcher routing work to whoever's available.

The repair itself sounds simple, but what drives the cost up or down is what's happening behind the faceplate. A single outlet with a loose connection and solid wiring behind it is a quick fix. A switch fed by aluminum wiring in an older home, or an outlet that keeps tripping because it's sharing a circuit it shouldn't be on. Those take more time and more expertise to do correctly. We don't quote a number before we know what we're looking at. Every job is different, contact Priceless Electric for an accurate estimate.

Signs Your Outlets or Switches Need Attention

Some of these are easy to ignore. None of them should be.

01

Outlets That Are Warm or Discolored

Heat at a faceplate means something upstream is drawing more current than the wiring handles well. Scorch marks, yellowing, or a warm cover plate are not cosmetic issues.

02

Switches That Click but Do Nothing

A switch that's lost its function could be a failed device or a broken connection in the box. Either way, it needs to be opened and inspected before you assume which one it is.

03

Outlets That Won't Hold a Plug

Worn contacts inside the outlet lose their grip over time. A plug that falls out or sits loose isn't just irritating. It creates an arc gap that can generate heat.

04

Tripping GFCI Outlets

If your GFCI outlet won't reset or trips constantly, the problem may be moisture, a wiring fault downstream, or a failing device. We track it down rather than just replace the outlet and leave.

05

Buzzing or Crackling from the Wall

Electrical noise behind a switch or outlet is almost always a loose connection. Loose connections arc, and arcs start fires. Don't wait on this one.

06

Dead Outlets with No Obvious Cause

Before you assume the outlet failed, there's usually a GFCI somewhere upstream that tripped and killed power to a whole circuit. We find it, and if it's tripping repeatedly, we find out why.

How We Work

Our Repair Process, Start to Finish

  1. 01

    Diagnose Before We Touch Anything

We test the outlet or switch, check the circuit it sits on, and inspect the wiring in the box. The device itself is usually not the whole story.

  2. 02

    Fix What's Actually Wrong

We replace the failed device with a quality part, re-terminate any loose connections, and verify the circuit is carrying current correctly before we close the wall.

  3. 03

    Confirm Everything Before We Leave

Every repaired outlet and switch gets tested under load. We don't call it done until it's working the way it's supposed to, and we walk you through what we found.

Why a Licensed Electrician Matters for This Work

outlet & switch repair work, professional service in Grovetown, GA
There's no shortage of handymen who'll swap an outlet for cash. What they won't do is pull the wiring, check for aluminum conductors, verify the box is properly grounded, or flag a double-tapped breaker feeding the circuit. We do all of that because we're licensed in Georgia and because John Price's name is literally on the company. We're not going to sign off on a repair that leaves your home less protected than when we arrived. If we open a box and find something that needs more than a device swap, deteriorated insulation, improper wiring gauge, a missing ground, we tell you straight. No pressure. Just the facts about what we found and what it means. An electrical safety inspection is a good follow-up if your home is older and you've been having recurring issues across multiple circuits.

Outlet and Switch Repair: Common Questions

How do I know if a dead outlet is a wiring problem or just a tripped GFCI?
Check every GFCI outlet in the house, especially in bathrooms, the kitchen, garage, and outdoors. Many outlets share a GFCI upstream, and when that trips, it kills power to a whole group of receptacles. If resetting the GFCI restores power, you're done. If the GFCI won't reset or keeps tripping, the fault is downstream and needs to be traced.
Is a warm outlet cover plate always an emergency?
Warm is a warning. Hot is an emergency. A faceplate that's noticeably warm to the touch means something is wrong with the connection or the load on that circuit. Stop using the outlet and call us. If the plate is hot, discolored, or you smell burning, cut power at the breaker immediately and call. Don't use that outlet again until it's been inspected.
Can I replace a standard outlet with a GFCI outlet myself?
Georgia code requires permitted electrical work to be done by a licensed contractor in most cases. More practically, GFCI outlets wired incorrectly won't protect you. They'll just pass current through as if they were standard outlets. Wiring the LINE and LOAD terminals wrong is a very common mistake. We'd rather do it right the first time than come fix it after something goes wrong.
Why does my outlet work sometimes and not others?
Intermittent outlet failures almost always mean a loose connection, either at the outlet terminals or back at the breaker. The connection makes contact sometimes and not others, depending on vibration, temperature, or load. This is actually one of the more dangerous failure modes because it's easy to ignore, and loose connections arc, generating heat inside the wall.
My dimmer switch buzzes when the lights are on. Is that normal?
Mild buzzing from a dimmer can happen when the switch isn't matched to the type of bulb on the circuit. LED bulbs in particular need a dimmer rated for LEDs, older leading-edge dimmers cause buzz and flicker with LEDs. If you've already matched the dimmer to the bulb type and the buzzing persists, the issue may be in the wiring or the dimmer itself. We check compatibility before we replace anything.
Do you handle outdoor outlets and weatherproof covers?
Outdoor outlets are one of the most commonly mishandled repairs we see. They need to be GFCI-protected, rated for wet or damp locations depending on exposure, and mounted with an in-use cover if anything plugs into them while it's raining. A standard indoor outlet behind a basic cover plate on an exterior wall is a code violation. We bring outdoor receptacles up to current standards when we repair or replace them.
