Finding the Root of Electrical Problems

Electrical problems don't announce themselves with a clear label. A breaker that trips once might be nothing. A breaker that trips every time you run the microwave is telling you something, and ignoring it is how a nuisance becomes a hazard. Priceless Electric handles electrical troubleshooting and repair across the Augusta metro and Columbia County, and John Price has been tracking down the source of these problems for over 20 years. If your lights are flickering, an outlet's stopped working, or something smells like it's burning near a switch, call us at (706) 627-6021 before it gets worse.

Good electrical troubleshooting isn't guesswork. We use diagnostic tools to trace the actual fault, whether that's a loose neutral, an overloaded circuit, a failing breaker, or something further back in the system like a wiring issue inside the wall. What drives the scope of a repair is what we find: a bad outlet connection is a fast fix, while a wiring fault in an older home might open up a conversation about residential rewiring or a panel upgrade. We'll tell you exactly what we found and what it takes to fix it. Every job is different, so contact Priceless Electric for an accurate estimate.

Warning Signs

Electrical Symptoms That Deserve a Closer Look

Some electrical problems are obvious. Others hide until they cause real damage.

01

Breakers That Keep Tripping

A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same circuit isn't just inconvenient. It's the panel telling you that circuit is being pushed past its rated load, or that there's a fault downstream. Don't keep resetting it and hoping. We'll find out which one it is.

02

Flickering or Dimming Lights

Lights that flicker when an appliance kicks on often point to a voltage drop caused by an undersized circuit or a loose connection somewhere in the run. Flickering that happens randomly, with no load change, is a different problem and usually more serious.

03

Dead Outlets or Switches

Before you call, check your GFCI outlets in the bathroom or kitchen and make sure none have tripped. If resetting those doesn't bring power back, the fault is likely a wiring issue, a failed device, or a tripped breaker that won't reset properly. We'll trace it.

04

Burning Smell or Discoloration

A burning smell near an outlet, switch, or panel is not something you wait on. Turn off the circuit and call us. Scorched cover plates or discoloration around a receptacle means arcing has already started, and that's how electrical fires begin.

05

Outlets That Spark

A brief, small spark when you plug something in can be normal. A spark that's large, loud, or happens when nothing's being plugged in is not. That's a loose connection or a failing outlet, and it warrants an outlet inspection and repair right away.

06

Buzzing or Humming Sounds

Electricity shouldn't make noise. Buzzing from a switch usually means a failing dimmer or a loose connection. Humming from a panel is often a breaker that's partially tripped or starting to fail. Both are fixable. Neither should be ignored.

Our Process

How We Diagnose Electrical Faults

  1. 01

    Listen and Inspect

We start by asking the right questions: when does it happen, what's on the circuit, how long has it been going on. Then we do a physical inspection of the panel, the affected devices, and any accessible wiring before we pull out a single tool.

  2. 02

    Test and Isolate

Using meters and diagnostic equipment, we measure voltage, continuity, and load across the circuit. That tells us whether the fault is in the device, the wiring, the breaker, or upstream at the panel. No guessing, no replacing parts to see what happens.

  3. 03

    Repair and Verify

Once we've isolated the fault, we fix it correctly and test the circuit under load before we leave. If we find something bigger, like a panel that's reached the end of its life or wiring that needs updating, we'll tell you straight and give you options.

What We Find

Common Electrical Faults in Augusta Area Homes

Electrical diagnostic tools and circuit blueprints laid out during a troubleshooting service call
Older homes throughout Columbia County and the Augusta area tend to share a few common electrical problems. Aluminum wiring from the 1960s and 70s is still present in some homes and needs specific connectors and handling to be safe. Undersized panels, especially 100-amp services in homes that now have central HVAC and multiple large appliances, show up regularly as the root cause of chronic breaker trips. Homes that have been renovated without permits often have mixed wiring methods, junction boxes buried in walls, and circuits that don't match the panel directory. We also see a lot of GFCI and outlet issues in homes where the original wiring was never grounded, which is a separate problem from the outlets themselves. If your home is pre-1980 or has had DIY electrical work done over the years, a thorough diagnostic service is worth doing before something fails at the wrong moment. For homes needing more than a repair, we also handle ground wire installation and full panel upgrades when the diagnostic points that direction.

What Sets a Real Diagnostic Apart

  1. 01

We Don't Replace Parts at Random

Swapping outlets and breakers until something works isn't diagnosing, it's guessing. We measure first. That's the only way to know whether the problem is the device, the wire, or the circuit.

  2. 02

We Show You What We Found

John Price explains what the fault was, why it happened, and what was done to fix it. You'll know exactly what was wrong and what it took to correct it before we wrap up the call.

  3. 03

We Flag What Else Needs Attention

If we find additional hazards during a service call, we tell you. Not to upsell, but because a second fault two feet from the one that brought us out is something you need to know about. We won't hide it.

Electrical Troubleshooting Questions

Why does my breaker trip every time I run a specific appliance?
That's almost always a circuit load issue or a fault in the appliance cord or plug. If the appliance draws more current than the circuit is rated for, the breaker trips to protect the wiring. If it trips even with a smaller load, the breaker itself may be failing or there's a fault further down the circuit. We can measure the actual load and test the breaker under demand to tell you which it is.
Can a flickering light be dangerous, or is it just annoying?
Depends on why it's flickering. A loose bulb or a worn-out fixture isn't a safety issue. But flickering that tracks with appliance use often signals a voltage drop from a poor connection or an undersized circuit, and loose connections in wiring can arc and generate heat over time. Arcing is one of the leading causes of residential electrical fires. Get it checked.
What does it mean if an outlet feels warm to the touch?
Warm outlets are a red flag. A properly wired outlet under normal load shouldn't produce noticeable heat. Warmth usually points to a loose connection creating resistance, a circuit that's consistently overloaded, or a failing outlet device. Turn off that circuit and stop using the outlet until it's inspected. It's the kind of thing that gets worse at the worst possible time if ignored.
My panel directory doesn't match what's actually on the circuits. Is that a problem?
It's a real problem, yes. An inaccurate panel directory means the next person working on that panel, whether it's an electrician, a home inspector, or a first responder, can't safely identify which breaker controls what. It also makes diagnosing any future fault significantly harder. We can trace and label circuits accurately as part of a service call, and it's one of the things we look for during a troubleshooting visit.
How do I know if my home has a wiring problem versus a panel problem?
The short answer is that you often can't tell from symptoms alone, and that's exactly why diagnostic testing matters. A tripping breaker might mean a bad breaker, an overloaded circuit, or a wiring fault. Voltage drop might be at the panel or at a connection point somewhere in the run. We use meters to locate the fault rather than guessing. If the panel itself is the issue, we'll walk you through your panel upgrade options.
Is it safe to use an extension cord as a permanent solution for an outlet that stopped working?
No. Extension cords aren't rated for continuous use and weren't designed to substitute for permanent wiring. Running one long-term is a fire hazard, especially under furniture or rugs where heat can't dissipate. If an outlet isn't working, we fix the outlet. It's usually a quick repair, and the cost is a fraction of the risk you take leaving it as-is.
