Light Fixture Repair That Goes to the Source

Priceless Electric handles light fixture repair throughout the Augusta metro and Columbia County, from a single flickering bathroom vanity to a chandelier that won't come on at all. If a fixture in your home is acting up, it's rarely just the bulb. Loose wire connections, a failing socket, a degraded ballast in an older fluorescent fixture, or a wiring fault at the junction box are the real culprits most of the time, and none of those are something you want to probe yourself. John Price has been diagnosing exactly these kinds of electrical failures for over 20 years, and we carry the licensing, bonding, and insurance to back every repair we make. Call (706) 627-6021 and let's figure out what's actually wrong.

Light fixture repair covers a wide range of work depending on what you've got and what's failed. A simple socket replacement on a ceiling fan light kit is a quick visit. A pendant that keeps tripping the breaker, or a recessed can that's intermittently cutting out, takes real diagnostic work, tracing the circuit, checking the junction box for heat damage or loose leads, and sometimes pulling wire to find a fault upstream. LED fixtures add their own layer: drivers fail, dimmer compatibility causes flicker, and the wrong replacement components create heat that shortens the fixture's life. We don't just swap parts and leave. We inspect the mounting hardware, verify the ground, and make sure whatever we put back together meets code. Cost varies with scope, access, and what we find inside the box. Every job is different, contact Priceless Electric for an accurate estimate.

Common Problems

Why Your Fixture Is Failing

Most fixture problems have one of five root causes, and most of them aren't obvious from the outside.

01

Loose Wire Connections

Connections inside the junction box work loose over years of thermal expansion and vibration. The fixture flickers, dims intermittently, or goes dark entirely, and the problem gets worse if you ignore it. A loose lead arcing inside a box is a fire hazard, not an inconvenience.

02

Failed Ballast (Fluorescent Fixtures)

If you've got older fluorescent strip lights or shop lights and they're buzzing, flickering badly, or producing a yellow-green cast, the ballast is probably done. We can replace the ballast or, in many cases, convert the fixture to a direct-wire LED tube that won't need one at all.

03

Burned or Degraded Socket

The socket that holds the bulb takes heat every time the fixture is on. Over time the brass contact flattens, the socket shell corrodes, or the insulation on the socket wires melts from an oversized bulb. The fixture works fine until it suddenly doesn't, and that's usually what's happened.

04

Dimmer and LED Incompatibility

LED fixtures flicker when paired with a dimmer designed for incandescent loads. It's one of the most common complaints we hear on newer fixtures. The fix is usually a compatible dimmer switch, not a new fixture, but you need to verify the driver rating and the switch spec before swapping anything in.

05

Junction Box Problems

A fixture that sags, wobbles, or was installed on a box not rated for its weight is an electrical safety issue regardless of whether the light works. We check the mounting hardware and box rating on every fixture repair, not just the wires.

Our Process

How We Diagnose and Fix It

  1. 01

    Isolate the Fault

We start at the switch, work to the box, and test the fixture itself, in that order. Most electricians skip steps. We don't, because the symptom at the fixture is often caused by something upstream.

  2. 02

Repair or Replace the Right Component

We fix what's actually broken: socket, ballast, wiring, driver, junction box, or mounting hardware. If the fixture itself is beyond saving, we'll tell you straight and talk through your options, no pressure.

  3. 03

    Verify Before We Leave

After every repair we confirm the fixture is grounded, the connections are secure, and the circuit behaves normally under load. We don't call it done until the switch works the way it's supposed to.

DIY vs. Professional

When to Call Instead of YouTube It

loose wire connections work, professional service in Grovetown, GA
Changing a bulb is not electrical work. Swapping a fixture on a circuit you've confirmed is off, and where the wiring is straightforward, is something a handy homeowner can manage. But we get calls regularly from people who started simple and found something they didn't expect: wires with no ground, a box packed with connections that don't make sense, or aluminum wiring that changes everything about how the repair has to be done. If the fixture is on a ceiling fan, if it involves recessed cans on a dimmed circuit, if it's a heavy chandelier over a dining table, or if you found anything unexpected when you opened the box, stop there. The risk isn't just the shock; it's a loose connection that smolders inside a wall for months before it becomes a problem. John Price has been doing this work across the CSRA for over 20 years. A call to (706) 627-6021 costs nothing. We'll tell you honestly whether it's something you can handle or something we need to look at. We won't push a service call you don't need.

What We Handle Beyond the Fixture Itself

  1. 01

    Junction Box Replacement and Upgrade

Old work boxes, undersized boxes, and plastic boxes not rated for fan or heavy fixture weight get replaced properly, not just stuffed back in and covered.

  2. 02

    Circuit Troubleshooting at the Panel

If a breaker trips when a fixture is switched on, the problem isn't the fixture. We trace it to the electrical panel and find the fault before we touch anything else.

  3. 03

    Ground Wire Verification and Installation

Ungrounded fixtures are a code issue and a safety issue. If we find one during a repair, we address it, either by adding a ground wire or flagging it clearly so you understand what you have.

  4. 04

Outlet and Switch Work on the Same Visit

If we're already on-site for a fixture repair and you've got a dead outlet or a switch that needs attention, we handle it in the same visit rather than scheduling a second trip.

Fixture Repair Questions, Answered Straight

How do I troubleshoot a light fixture that's flickering but the bulb is fine?
Start at the switch, a loose connection there causes flicker the same way a loose lead at the fixture does. After that, check that the bulb is fully seated and the socket contact hasn't flattened. If neither fixes it, the problem is likely inside the junction box: a loose wire nut, a corroded connection, or in older homes, a backstabbed connection on the switch that's finally failing. Flickering that gets worse over time isn't a nuisance; it's a sign of arcing that needs attention.
Is it difficult to replace a light fixture yourself?
A straightforward swap on a grounded circuit with standard wiring is manageable for a careful homeowner, but there are real decision points. If the box isn't rated for the fixture's weight, if you're on aluminum wiring, or if you open the box and find more wires than you expected, the job changes fast. Heavy fixtures like chandeliers need fan-rated boxes and sometimes blocking in the ceiling. And any time you're working near live wires on a circuit you're not certain is off, the risk is serious. If there's any doubt, a licensed electrician is the right call.
Why does my recessed can light keep going off on its own and then coming back on?
That's the thermal cutout doing its job. Recessed cans have a built-in safety device that shuts the fixture off when it gets too hot, then resets when it cools. The usual cause is an oversized bulb, cans are often rated for 60W incandescent or the LED equivalent, and a 75W or 100W bulb trips the cutout. It can also happen if insulation has been packed directly over the fixture in an IC-rated can, or if the fixture itself is failing. Check the bulb wattage first; if that's correct, call us.
Can a fluorescent light fixture be repaired, or does it need to be replaced?
Most fluorescent fixture problems come down to the ballast, and ballasts can be replaced at a fraction of the cost of a new fixture. The catch is that ballast replacement is specific to the fixture: you need a matching voltage, lamp count, and lamp type. In many cases, converting the fixture to a direct-wire LED tube is a better long-term call than replacing an old magnetic or failing electronic ballast. We'll tell you which approach makes more sense for what you've got.
What does it mean when a light fixture hums or buzzes?
A low hum from a fluorescent fixture almost always means the ballast is on its way out. A hum from an incandescent or LED fixture on a dimmer circuit usually means the dimmer and the fixture aren't compatible, older dimmers designed for incandescent loads push LED drivers hard and the result is audible interference. In either case, the noise gets worse before the fixture fails. A buzzing outlet or switch near the fixture is a different problem and warrants an electrical safety inspection before anything else.
Do you repair outdoor light fixtures and security lighting?
Yes. Outdoor fixture repair covers everything from a dead porch light to a motion-sensor security light that won't trigger correctly. Outdoor work adds considerations that indoor repairs don't: the junction box needs to be rated for wet or damp locations, weatherproof covers have to seal correctly, and in some cases the wiring from the house to the fixture needs to be checked for insulation damage from sun exposure or moisture. If you've got exterior lighting that's unreliable or dead, give us a call and we'll sort it out.
Why does my recessed can light keep shutting off and then coming back on?
That's the thermal cutout doing its job. Recessed cans have a built-in safety device that shuts the fixture off when it overheats, then resets when it cools. The most common cause is an oversized bulb. It can also happen if insulation is packed directly over a non-IC-rated fixture. Check the bulb wattage first; if that's correct and the problem continues, call us.
Can a fluorescent light fixture be repaired, or does it have to be replaced?
Most fluorescent fixture problems come down to the ballast, and ballasts can be replaced at a fraction of new fixture cost. In many cases, converting to a direct-wire LED tube is a better long-term call than replacing an aging ballast. We'll tell you which approach makes more sense for what you have.
Do you repair outdoor and security light fixtures?
Yes. Outdoor fixture repair covers porch lights, motion-sensor security lights, and anything mounted on exterior walls or soffits. Outdoor work requires wet or damp-rated junction boxes, weatherproof covers, and a check of the wiring for sun or moisture damage. If your exterior lighting is unreliable or dead, call us and we'll sort it out.
